Alone / Together: Mothering / Daughtering

Examining a single parent and only child relationship is something I’ve been avoiding in my work for some time. These pieces are meant to evoke the cozy and safe spaces of my childhood, in addition to the spaces I’ve had to navigate and create for myself. Using a reflective process, this installation was created by looking through photo albums, talking with my mom, and exploring the materiality of childhood. Parsing out what I wanted to share was daunting. How would I begin to artistically show a relationship that took form as I did? Depicting beds or soft spaces felt right after looking through several photo albums abruptly realizing the pervasive theme becoming acutely aware of the tenderness I was oblivious to, I knew that tenderness needed memorializing.

I AM monotony
THIS IS chaos

Examining the effects of the 2020 quarantine experience, my Shuchat grant focuses on the unique contradictions found in the everyday experiences of quarantine. How every day began to feel the same, yet there were new challenges and experiences on the global level, that in turn rippled through the mundane. These occurrences culminate into an installation focused on the nuanced intersection of monotony, repetition, chaos, and newness. Connecting the two are a series of monotype collages further examining themes of contradictions, confinement, illness, stagnancy, and change.
